How Agora handles your data, in plain language.

What Agora is

Agora is civic infrastructure, not an advertising product. We do not sell your data, we do not run ads, and we do not use third-party trackers.

What we collect

  • Your email address, used to sign you in.
  • The address you enter during onboarding. We turn it into your districts and store approximate coordinates, your district identifiers, and your census tract. We do not store the address text itself.
  • If you use Who represents me? without an account, the address you type goes to the US Census Bureau's public geocoder to find your districts. We show you the result and keep nothing.
  • If you choose "Make these my representatives" or pick a position on a public bill page, that address or position stays in this browser for up to an hour, until you sign in, and nowhere else.
  • Your participation: the bills, polls, and questions you engage with, and the follows you choose.

Your census tract

A census tract is an area defined by the Census Bureau, usually around 4,000 people. It arrives in the same lookup that finds your districts, so collecting it asks nothing more of you and reveals nothing your coordinates did not already.

We keep it so that an office can eventually be shown which parts of its district have not been heard from, using public census statistics about areas rather than anything about you. We never display it, never export it, and never attach it to you as an individual. No tract-level figure is produced at all unless at least 10 different people in that tract have taken part; below that the tract is left out entirely.

The same lookup also returns your census block, a much smaller area. We deliberately do not keep it.

How officials see it

Officials only ever see totals and constituency-weighted counts, never your identity or your browsing. Anonymized written reasons may be shown to the office they were sent to, without your name.

Analytics

We use first-party analytics only, to understand and improve the product. No third-party analytics, and no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to sharing.

If you create an account after starting on one of our public pages, we add one to a monthly count of new accounts by kind of page (an official's page, a bill page or the lookup). The count does not record who you are. For your account's first day we keep a note that it has been counted, so it is counted only once; the note does not say which page, and it is then deleted.

Verification

We keep the minimum needed to confirm your district. If you choose stronger identity checks later, they are handled by a vendor and we store the result, not the documents.
