The sponsor's argument

Why Dean Murray says this is needed

The Town of Islip is one of the largest municipalities in New York State, with a population of approximately 339,000 residents and an annu- al budget approaching $300 million. The size, complexity, and scope of operations of the Town demand the highest level of legal expertise and professional experience in the position of town attorney. This legislation ensures that the people of the Town of Islip have access to the most qualified and capable legal counsel available. By allowing the Town to conduct a countywide search across Suffolk County, which has a population of over 1.5 million people, the Town Board will be better positioned to identify and appoint the most highly qualified individual to serve as town attorney. There is long-standing precedent for this approach. Many towns through- out New York State are permitted to appoint attorneys from outside their immediate municipal boundaries in order to secure the best legal repre- sentation. This bill aligns the Town of Islip with that precedent and modernizes its ability to recruit top legal talent. Ultimately, this legislation is about good governance. It provides the flexibility necessary to ensure that legal decisions impacting taxpay- ers, infrastructure, public safety, and municipal operations are guided by the most experienced and capable professionals available.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
