The sponsor's argument

Why Monica Martinez says this is needed

The Stony Brook Southampton Campus is located in Shinnecock Hills in the Town of Southampton on the East End of Long Island. The campus is home to various programs including the University's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, School of Health Professions, School of Social Work, and Southampton Arts. Additionally, Stony Brook Southampton Hospi- tal is one of Stony Brook Medicine's four hospitals and it is located several miles east, in Southampton Village. Legislation passed in 2018 provided for the development of a new Stony Brook Southampton Hospital on the Stony Brook Southampton Campus. To support a hospital moving further west, in 2025, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and the South- ampton Hospital Association opened a standalone emergency department in East Hampton. The East End of Long Island has a limited housing supply, particularly for the healthcare workforce. Stony Brook University is seeking to build workforce housing to help recruit and retain staff at the current and future Southampton Hospital, East Hampton ED, and various clinical facilities across the South Fork. Similar legislation was enacted in 2025 to support housing on Stony Brook's main campus for student and workforce housing (Ch. 413, L. 2025). This bill would allow SLTNY to enter into a lease with the Stony Brook Southampton Housing Development Corp, a not for profit corporation majority controlled by members of the community, to develop housing to support the Stony Brook workforce. The proposed acreage is the same location that over a dozen condemned buildings are being torn down with the goal of revitalizing the campus with new housing. The surrounding community has been engaged in the University's desire for housing for nearly two years through the Stony Brook Southampton Advisory Committee, a group composed of University leaders, government and elected offi- cials, non profits, labor, and members of the community.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
