The sponsor's argument

Why Siela Bynoe says this is needed

Type 1 diabetes is a threatening autoimmune condition that often devel- ops in early childhood and can dangerously progress if left undiagnosed. Early detection of the condition is crucial in preventing life-threaten- ing complications, such as diabetic ketoacidosis. Many of the parents or guardians of the children are unaware of the early warning signs of type 1 .diabetes, which results in a lack of diagnosis. The lack of diagnosis could lead to avoidable medical emer- gencies. Schools can serve as a point of information and communication with fami- lies and can spread crucial health information. By requiring the development and distribution of informational materi- als, this bill promotes early awareness, encourages medical consulta- tion, and supports better health outcomes for children who are at risk of type 1 diabetes and its complications across New York State.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
