The sponsor's argument
Why Julia Salazar says this is needed
At the recommendation of the Commissioner of Education to the Board of Regents, upon adoption, this bill would add age-appropriate dating violence prevention and healthy relationships education in the annual school curriculum for students in grades seven through twelve. Dating violence among young people is widespread. Many young people have limit- ed information as to how to develop healthy relationships or how to prevent or avoid violence in dating relationships. Furthermore, dating violence amongst youth disproportionately impacts women and the LGBTQ+ community. LGBTQ+ youth experience higher rates of physical and dating violence than their heterosexual peers. Adding instruction on dating violence into the annual curriculum will help to provide for healthier and safer relationships in the teen years.
