The sponsor's argument
Why Shelley Mayer says this is needed
This legislation is designed to make clear that under the John R Lewis Voting Rights Act of New York, aggrieved persons, organizations, or the attorney general, can seek immediate relief to stop actions intended to interfere with the ability of individuals to vote. Federal officials have openly indicated their intention to use federal agents to interfere with voting on days when votes are cast. This bill clarifies that courts can use injunctive relief, restraining orders, and cease and desist orders to prevent the presence of any actors, whether under color of law or otherwise, from interfering with New Yorker's right to vote. Adding this language will clarify that courts have the ability to move swiftly and decisively during elections to protect voters.
This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
