The sponsor's argument
Why Steve Rhoads says this is needed
In 2017, the Governor issued an executive order which prohibited state agencies and officers from inquiring about or disclosing an individual's immigration status in most circumstances. This order also prohibited law enforcement from asking about immigration status unless investigating further criminal activity. This bill would prohibit the governor from preventing law enforcement from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for the purpose of enforcing federal immigration law, effectively ending New York state's status as an illegal immigration sanctuary.
This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
