The sponsor's argument
Why Pete Harckham says this is needed
Plastic waste from single-use utensils and condiment packets contributes significantly to environmental pollution, harming ecosystems and wild- life while overburdening waste management systems. With growing concerns about plastic pollution and its long-term impact on marine life and human health, New York must adopt measures that encourage the use of sustainable alternatives. Eco-friendly utensils and condiments, made from compostable or reusable materials, present a viable solution to reduce plastic consumption while supporting the state's environmental conservation goals. Many states and cities across the country have successfully implemented similar policies, demonstrating that eco- friendly practices can be seamlessly integrated into food service oper- ations without compromising customer convenience or business profitabil- ity.
This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
