The sponsor's argument

Why James Skoufis says this is needed

This legislation seeks to include the workforce at Stewart International Airport under the Healthy Terminals Act. The bill aims to reduce turn- over and enhance health and safety among airport workers by ensuring they receive prevailing wages consistent with Article 9 of the Labor Law. Doing so will help create a stronger, more skilled, and better- trained workforce to protect and secure these critical facilities. Work- ers will receive wages and fringe benefits, including healthcare, based on their job classification and region, reducing reliance on taxpayer- funded programs. The necessity for such legislation has never been greater, particularly in light of the ongoing health crisis. After serv- ing during the COVID-19 pandemic, many of these frontline workers remain without employer-provided health insurance or any coverage, highlighting the urgent need for this measure.
