The sponsor's argument

Why Jeremy Cooney says this is needed

Deputy Sheriff Gregory M. Prokop began his career on October 7th, 1991, as a part-time - Road Patrol Deputy for the Monroe County Sheriffs Office. In April 1996, Monroe County adopted the 20-year retirement for the Road Patrol. At the time, Deputy Prokop was a part-time - Road Patrol Deputy working in the Parks, and Marine Unit and was not notified by Monroe County that he was eligible for this retirement plan. For reasons not ascribable to his own negligence, Mr. Prokop was hired full- time to the Road Patrol in February 2000 at which time he signed up for the 20 years w/ 1/60th retirement. Shortly after doing so, he received a letter from the NYS Retirement System that he had one year from when the County adopted the retirement to sign up for it (April 1st, 1996). This bill allows Deputy Prokop the option to join this retirement plan to rectify this error.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
