The sponsor's argument

Why Kristen Gonzalez says this is needed

This bill is the same as the "Protect Passover Act" passed earlier this session and adjusted to address the next religious conflict in 2026. The current deadline to file petitions in 2026 would restrict observant Jewish candidates from filing and interferes with Seders, as it overlaps with the first day of Passover. This act would shift the filing deadline for 2026, ensuring that New Yorkers of all faiths can equally partic- ipate in the electoral process and adhere to the same deadlines.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
