The sponsor's argument

Why Robert Jackson says this is needed

Currently, a deputy sheriff is entitled to an accidental disability retirement of two-thirds of his or her final average salary. Most other police officers and paid firefighters throughout NYS are entitled to an accidental disability retirement of three-quarters. Deputy Sheriffs are classified as police officers pursuant to the section 1.20 of the Crimi- nal Procedure Law. Deputies attend that same police academies and perform the same dangerous work as their fellow police officers. This bill is needed to provide parity with the majority of police and paid firefighters throughout New' York State.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
