The sponsor's argument

Why Mario Mattera says this is needed

The Town of Huntington Fire Marshal's Office frequently collaborates with the Suffolk County Police Department's Second Precinct on special operations. Given the difficult nature of these assignments, providing peace officer status to the uniformed officers of the fire marshal's office will provide essential protection for these public servants, particularly during emergencies and sensitive enforcement operations. It will also give the uniformed officers of the Town of Huntington Fire Marshal's Office parity with neighboring jurisdictions that currently have peace officer status including the towns of Islip, Babylon, Smith- town, Brookhaven, Riverhead and Southampton.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
