The sponsor's argument

Why Michael Gianaris says this is needed

Under current election law, ballots must assign a designating letter to each row or column containing the names of candidates in the same party or independent body. This bill would make it optional to print such designating letters to help free up space on ballots.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
