The sponsor's argument

Why Anthony H. Palumbo says this is needed

Back in 2023, the New York State Police suspended their law enforcement coverage of Fishers Island and The Southold Town Police Department has assumed those law enforcement duties. However, there are times when only 1 officer is on the Island. The need for additional peace officers is primarily due to its remote, isolated location. There is a need for 'specialized local law enforce- ment for year-round security, visitor management and emergency response. They provide necessary community policing, handle and manage public safety on an island accessible only by ferry. More, officers will provide a consistent and visible presence for crime prevention and public safety.

This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
