The sponsor's argument
Why William Weber says this is needed
Nearly 175 years have passed since the "Great Famine" (1845-1852) of Ireland. During the worst year (1847) of the famine the Ireland popu- lation was about 8.5 million; by 1901 the population dropped to 4.4 million. Over one million people died and another one million or more fled the country. Between 1845 and 1855 at least 2.1 million people left Ireland, primarily on packet ships but also on steamboats and baroques - one of the greatest exoduses from a single island in history. This bill will help to ensure that the "Great Famine" is being taught throughout the state of New York in each school district.
This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
