The sponsor's argument
Consumers increasingly rely on advertised discounts when making purchas- ing decision, yet many businesses advertise "sales" or discounts" based on inflated or fictions original prices. These practices mislead consum- ers into believing they are receiving a bargain when no real discount exists. This bill promotes transparency and fairness in the marketplace by requiring that advertised discounts be based on prices that were actual- ly offered for a reasonably substantial period of time. By clearly defining deceptive discounting prices, the legislation strengthens consumer protection, supports honest businesses, and enhanced enforce- ment of existing false advertising laws.
This is the sponsor's own case for the bill, quoted from their memorandum. It is not Agora's description of what the bill does.
